The Battle of the Bed Bugs, Drove me Buggy

Battle of the Bed Bugs

I no longer have bed bug issues, as far as having them in my home. But the memory of the battle lingers on. (And believe me that issue will drive ya buggy !) Prevention is better than cure in all things. With prayer, my hope is that this "article" helps you to not go through the issues that my family already has.

Not too long ago, bed bugs which were talked about quite often in the media, has seem to have faded. Yet the majority of society is unaware of how easily it is to come in contact with them or how very difficult it is to rid their homes of them. Speaking from first hand experience, it is merely impossible without major combat.

DO NOT believe that “bombing” your home, as  you would  do when you have a flea infestation, will solve the issue. My husband and I wastefully invested in that idea. Cans that say Bed Bug foggers don't tell you that the bugs retreat into wall cracks, base boards and any other hiding places at the beginning of “bomb” fumigation. In the foggy battle the pesky little bed bugs crawl into televisions, radios, picture frames, toys, clothes, dresser drawers and many other unexpected places.

Let the fight begin.....

We stripped carpets. As I was removing carpet tack boards, my son's wooden bunk bed frame was still in the room. Because it was in my way, I got tools and began disassembling it to get it out of my way. We thought we had this room conquered after much spraying and pre-bombing. As I turned the bolts with the wrench the boards separated and then appeared hundreds, maybe even thousands, of bed bugs that were in hiding. They crawled from their bug vacation home. One of many secret dwellings, I am sure. I opened my son's bed room window, and without the use of any tool, I began to rip that bunk bed apart, with my bare hands, and threw the now useless boards out of the window and into the front yard. I explained to my husband that these WILL BE burned !!!

This was only the beginning of the fight. The next step was educating myself more. I opened my lap top computer and researched many areas. I would win this war of the bugs.

SIGNS

What are the signs that you have bed bugs? My first indications were the blood stained sheets. My sons bedsheets looked as though he and his cousins had spent the night rolling and crushing
chocolate chip crumbs. Little smeared marks covered his pillow and sheets. I changed them before he went to bed and the marks were on the sheets the next morning. When I looked on the computer, that was all the evidence I needed. We had bed bugs.  I began to read diligently and thoroughly.

Everything had to be washed and dried in hot water. Everything. Any cloth item.  Did I mention everything ?

So into this war we went. We took the mattress to the dumpster immediately, along with his favorite pillow. Curtains came down in every room. We checked for bed bugs in the other rooms. My bed had a few signs also. I became bug-a phobic and began to become wildly and over emotionally overwhelmed. And very thankfully was able to move into my deceased mother in laws mobile home. I could not live in the place that was invaded by the skin eating blood sucking pests.

After every visit to my home I would return to the trailer, strip my clothes on the front porch. Immediately they would be tied in a trash bag and I would hose my body off and run quickly into a hot shower. After cleaning myself I then took the cautionary step in washing the possibly infested clothes into a hot water filled washing machine. I refused to have another place be filled with the devouring bugs.

RASHES
That is another sign of bed bugs. The computer confirmed the rash on my son's skin. Although bed bug bite reactions vary from person to person, I knew from the pictures that he was bitten by these vampire creatures. I had previously taken him to two health care providers for his rash. Both were unaware of what he had, claiming that he had a reaction to something he had probably eaten because the rash appeared to be coming from inside of his body. I am not upset with the misdiagnoses. After all this has just become what seems like an epidemic across the states. As more and more cases appear, they will become more and more educated. I certainly have.

 FURNITURE

What about beds and furniture? How could I tell signs that bed bugs are/were there ? First, inspect is the bed. Check the sheets and blankets for any dead bugs, dormant bugs, or small, black spots and streaks.  (To me, it looks like smeared chocolate streaks)Take pillows out of their cases and check along their seams. Remove the bedding and check the mattress for the same signs of spots, streaks or bugs. Check along seams, cording and under any buttons. They are especially fond of the cording around the edge of a mattress, where it folds over at the corners. If there is a label on the top of the mattress, check carefully around it and under any loose areas. If possible, lift the mattress and check the box springs and bed frame. Pay close attention to crevices, cracks and seams. They may be more likely on the underside of mattresses and box springs than on top. The bottom of box springs is their ideal habitat. Check along the dust cover. They congregate around the staples that hold the gauze dust cover to the frame. If the box springs have plastic or cardboard corner protectors, they will often rest under or around them. If possible, remove these to allow inspection, although it may be difficult or impossible to reattach them as they were originally installed. If the dust cover is loose, or torn, or if it can be removed by the owner, check inside the box springs for signs of insects. It is extremely difficult to thoroughly check every nook and cranny inside box springs, so if bugs are found on the outside it may be best to replace the box springs or cover it with a zippered case sold for dust mite and bug control. There are also bed bug covers for pillows.  Even though wooden bed frames are more likely to have insects than the more common metal variety, bugs can harbor in  the seams and overlapping sections of metal frames and should also be inspected. Be sure to look behind the headboard and behind any pictures or loose wallpaper near the bed.

Become educated. Learn about these pestilences before you actually need too. I wish I had.

Learn simple but very helpful prevention methods. Wash used clothing in hot water and dry throroughly in a hot dryer. Never wear new clothing without putting them in the dryer for at least 30 minutes on the highest heat settings. Heat kills bed bugs. Do not store your new shoes in the shoe boxes they come in. Cardboard is an easy hiding place. Shipping vans and tractor trailers are known to transport bedbugs. Many retail stores and companies have closed down due to infestations. You may have purchased items from those places before their doors were shut. Brand new store bought items are not exempt for a bug transport into your home. Throw away plastic storage bags such as grocery and department store bags.

Think you have been in a home that is infested, or maybe a hotel? Remove shoes and clothing before entering your home upon return. Bed bugs crawl quickly and can take a free ride on shoes or in cuffs or seams of clothing.

If staying a hotel bring only necessary items into the room. Those items would be best stored in zip lock bags. If you have not taken this precaution, be sure to wash your clothing items in hot water upon your return home. Spray your luggage with bed bug spray and store in plastic bags which are able to be sealed airtight. (We took necessary steps to store our luggage in the heat of a closed vehicle. Unfortunately not everyone has the ability to do that, as we do.) Prevention is the best medicine. If possible leave luggage in your vehicle and bring clothing and necessary articles in and out of the hotel in sealable bags or totes. Be sure to vacuum out your car after traveling. We vacuumed every crease and seam of every seat, floor and the trunk. What may hide will find you again when you return to your vehicle.

Unlike head lice, storing items in sealed bags for 48 days, will NOT kill beg bugs. It takes one year without a host to kill these pesky irritants.

We even took our electronics, videos, pictures, books, etc from our home and stored them, sealed in duct taped closed up plastic bags or totes, in the heat and dead cold winter before we placed them back into their places. What we could throw away, good or bad, we did. We threw away many items, realizing that keeping it's memory is better than keeping being bit by bugs that make hiding a sport. These bugs hide in everything.

We steamed. That little steamer went to work. We, the steamer and humans, both sweat through the chore. Walls seeped with steam. I don't think there was an inch that wasn't heated. Heat kills. Nothing else seemed to. I watched the pestilence scurry and but I caught them, boiling their blood sucking bodies. I was determined to kill. I wiped the little dead pests from my home and threw away the evidence. In some cases reported, the only way to defeat the bed bugs is to completely tent you home and heat it to 120 for atleast 4 hours.  I wonder if that would have been an easier step for us to have taken.

Bed Bug Traps

I learned through the Internet how to make home made bed bug traps. It was a good way to see if we had been successful in this exhausting task. To make bed bug traps, you need a shallow pan, such as a kitty litter pan, scrap cloth such as an old towel, baby powder, glue gun, dry ice and a lunch box thermos, Make strips, length wise, in the towels long enough for the material to reach the top rim of the kitty litter pan and about ½ inch over lapping the surface that it will sit on. In long strips glue the toweling all around the box. This will give the bugs something(ladder) to crawl up and into the box. Put a coating of baby powder on the inside walls of the kitty litter box. Carefully place dry ice in the thermos and place opened thermos inside the center of the litter box. The carbon dioxide that the dry ice puts off is what attracts the bed bugs. It is also what attracts the bed bugs to humans. Use these traps over night. In the morning you will see traces of bed bugs in the baby powder and dead bugs in the litter box. This is one way that can show you that you have bed bugs. There are other on line suggestions to try. But this one certainly helped us.

It answered our question. We had our proof that bed bugs still existed in our home. Oh my what are we to do now? A friend told of us Diatomaceous Earth (Diatomite). We bought a large container and went to work.

Diatomaceous Earth powder was put in every crease and corner of picture frames. I put the powder in every electrical outlet, baseboards, cabinets, piano, drawer, window pane... you name it the powder was there.

Wikipedia...

Pest control

Diatomite is used as an insecticide, due to its abrasive and physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate. Arthropods die as a result of the water pressure deficiency, based on Fick's law of diffusion. This also works against gastropods and is commonly employed in gardening to defeat slugs. However, since slugs inhabit humid environments, efficacy is very low. It is sometimes mixed with an attractant or other additives to increase its effectiveness. Medical-grade diatomite is sometimes used to de-worm both animals and humans, with questionable efficacy. It is commonly used in lieu of boric acid, and can be used to help control and possibly eliminate bed bug, house dust mite, cockroach and flea infestations. This material has wide application for insect control in grain storage.

Please wear protective clothing and face masks, the paper kind filters the fine dust, when working with the powder. Read precautions on label. I didn't do this as often as I should and ended up with some pretty nasty sinus infections. We also used the food grade dust so that it would not do any harm if accidentally ingested.

FINALLY...SUCCESS !!!

After all this work and not living in our home for a year, we beat the battle of the bugs. The smell of bleach overwhelmed us while cleaning the stains or the remains from our house. We vacuumed every inch we could.  It took lots of effort but it was worth it to have our home back. We conquered the battle of bed bugs !!!! I am still cleaning dust from crevices. And believe me I am taking many many precautions on prevention. Some may so I take too many . I have become and educated bug-a-phobic and proud of it.

I  do not want any of you to go through the same things as I have. It's taken me couple of years to finish writing this. I apologize to those who this may have helped by now. Really, it could help us all. I no longer have bed bug issues as far as having them in my home. But the memory of the battle lingers on. Prevention is better than cure in all things. Now, if I can erase the fear...for everyone.

Praying a hedge of protection around our home and yours, doing the work necessary it takes and I am..trusting in His word.

Psalm 91 NIV 3-11

3 Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

Oh what a day.... Family Reunion Stories.

I recently attended my Uncle Bill's annual family reunion picnic. Everyone gathered around the picnic tables lined with brown roofing paper secured by grey duct tape or hung out in scattered lawn
chairs. Others stood by the bank side and watched kids and adults, who thought they were kids, play in the murky pond. Music couldn't out blast the laughter. Rumbles of conversations collided into each other and everyone tried to hear everyone's talk so that they didn't miss out on any memories being chatted about.

Uncles made body noises as if they were teenage boys. Aunts smiled and giggled just like little girls. And everyone played with the four legged guest that manage, unexpectedly, to be invited as part of the family. One uncle kissed a woman after losing his wife a couple of years ago. That, my dear, shocked everyone. And, if you were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of that scene you also were lucky enough to hear the whispers that went along with the ooooh's that followed.

We played a dice game which I nicknamed "the Stupid Game". We played it until we were stupid. Little girls caught little hoppy toads.  Boys got muddy and family got...family. Bugs bit. Humidity rolled in. Storm clouds teased us but never came to pour its buckets on us. Some people might say it was perfect,

Only, it wasn't. People were missing. Aunts, brothers, sisters, cousins and grandparents. My mother. Tears trickled from the sides of my eyes and moistened my sweaty face. I really missed my mother.
I wanted to bring pictures but I left them back home tucked in the plastic storage bin. Her memory didn't stay there though. I" brought her" there with spoken stories of days from my  childhood when we came to Uncle Bills. "I remember the shirt she wore that said, "I'm with Stupid"." In the picture it pointed straight to my step dad. He stood, in the picture, shirtless, clueless that he stood in the direct hit of the teasing pointing finger t- shirt, while  he was eating a huge slice of watermelon. Those were the good ol'days. Those were moments I wish I could get back.  (Please take time to view past family reunion pictures at end of this blog)

A very special part of the group is not in these pictures anymore. Aunt Pat. No one can fill the void she left behind. Not even that woman who was kissing her husband at this picnic. Aunt Pat was beyond talented. She crocheted everything. She taught me how to make granny squares. Oh my, the torture when I missed something and stitched with a wrong count. Aunt Pat, with all the love in her heart, would remove the stitches....rows and rows of them, until she came to the spot where I messed up and made me do it over again from that point. Oh gosh, how I  hated when she did that. Each time she ripped out a row, I would cringe. But Aunt Pat was patient with me . She never yelled. She just taught me and had me start again so that I got it right. Loop, hook, what ever you called those things my hands and yarn were doing, she showed me how to do them and do them right... with a forgiving heart. I loved that about Aunt Pat. I sure wish she were sitting around that picnic table with her painted fake nails and super glue. (Another fun memory  tee hee)

Family. Reunions of the heart. Far from perfect. But loved.
Isn't that how God sees us?

I am so amazed that God sees us with forgiving hearts. Each of us are His children. Imperfect, having to start over again. He doesn't yell when we mess up. He cares when we do and directs us to start again and again, and again. His goal for us to is be made perfect and to one day...get it right. He loves the frog catching, noise making, water splashing, mud up to our ears, imperfect watermelon eating bug slapping family.  He gives us laughter, memories, protection from the storms and love.

We don't have to wait for a family reunion to go to Him. He provides that daily walk through His son, Jesus. It doesn't take planning and phone calls, hotel stays and travel. It takes saying Yes to Jesus, right where we are and then there is a never ending reunion between you and the Father.

Reunions? Yes, one day, because of Jesus, I will be reunited with loved ones. I pray that the ones who sat around the tables, swam in the pond, ate meatballs and hotdogs, and laughed will bask in the
SON and find the Joy of the Lord. Oh what a day that will be.

Heavenly Father, Thank you for choosing us to be a part of Your family. How secure we feel knowing that we don't ever  have to wait to come see you. You let us dine and laugh and be in Your awesome presence at all times. And Lord, when we go away from You, Thank You for always letting us run back home to You, our "Papa God."
In Jesus Name... Amen

Racing through the Storms

Why did it take so long for me to come forth and say, "He did this to me. He did it for three years." It happened over and over again. I felt him break my body and my spirit repeatedly. So what was it that made me yell until someone finally heard?  At 14, I walked in on someone who I loved very much. Another helpless soul was being ripped apart.  Thunder rolled inside of me and the fight for rescue hit me like lightening.  I stormed with hate that this was happening. I then felt guilty. Dirty, sad, mad and disgusted. I felt disgusting. I didn't want this boy to feel the same way I had. It was time to put a stop to it all. At least for the two of us.

Why speak up about it again? Why now, after all these years? What was the cause of verbally standing up for others? Many people who I cared about were under the same attack. One little boy in particular, that I love very much, was being victimized. It tore my heart into a million pieces. Flash backs occurred. Anger and hurt surfaced once more. A swirl of emotions exploded. Again I had asked myself, Why did it take so long to say something, to speak up for those being victimized ? And again, the storms of life rolled through my bones.

I had been sharing with a particular friend about his issues with childhood sexual abuse. We talked about the Lord and how God had never walked away. We gave each other the hope with words of encouragement. We lifted each other in prayer. God placed us in each others pathways so that we would trip into each others hearts. We shared God.

With all the studying, praying and digging deep into God's word, I became like a race horse, galloping through the rain to the finish line. I trotted past the sounds of thunder and pain of the darts of memory that struck like lightening. It took a long time before either of us to be ready to face our pain and reach for healing. Deep healing comes slowly. To acknowledge that reality is a powerful factor in learning to endure.

It took a very long time before I felt ready to cross the finish line and turn my name from Victim to Victor. I still have more effort to move forward to the end.  But as Jesus as my trainer, I  will make it through the storm.

Because of a sent message on my facebook today, I  noticed I had forgotten to look behind me to see if that other "rider" was still in the race. He sent me a clip from Cecile Murphy. In those words it said,
"I should be healed by now." When I spoke those words, I didn’t understand the pervasiveness of molestation. I wanted to be completely free from my past abuse and to have the memories wiped away.
Life doesn’t work that way. Healing is a process—and the word process means that the changes don't happen quickly.

Another section of the article said, It took a long time before we were ready to face our pain and reach for healing. Deep healing comes slowly. To acknowledge that reality is a powerful factor in learning to endure.

I got to thinking about that prayer partner God had sent to me. I knew that we were not keeping the same pace.  But we both had the same fight to endure and same goal..to heal. Healing is a process and we all progress at different paces. Needing to slow down enough for others to catch up is a new goal for me. No, I do not want to go backwards nor slow down but I do need to be careful to not leave others behind in the rain.

May my timing be God's. No matter when it is that we reach for Him, He is there for all of us. I pray that we can help each other, through prayer and encouragement, where ever we are in the race. Let us endure through Him.

Isaiah 40:28-31 (NIV)

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

He will stand by us through the storms.

Tempted and Loved

Temptation

"Oh my godness, I get so confused. Do I do this for me? Isn't what I want important too? Aw, just this once won't hurt anyone. I'm willing to take the risk. It's worth is all. Besides...no one is looking. No one that is, but me..and God."

Merriam Webster  Temptation-

1: the act of tempting or the state of being tempted especially to evil enticement

2: something tempting : a cause or occasion of enticement

Temptation.- - - when you want to do something you know you shouldn't.
Some temptations are easy to walk away from, never looking back at it and  easy to say no to. Others ones are stubborn . They nag and nag and pull and tug at you waiting for you to give into it's  determined request.

Your mind is having a sprititual tug of war.

Ephesians 6:12 : For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Jesus knows all about the temptations you face. After all, He was tempted too. But Jesus never surrendered to it. He can also help each of us be strong if we let Him.What a relief when we turn away. Not giving in helps you to grow in your faith.

There may be times that you find that you have given up and given in to that temptation. You do those things that you know God would not be pleased with. Then what do you do? God absolutely loves you inspite of your mistake and weakness. He will give you the power and strength to fight what ever that temptation when you come face to face with it.  When ever you come against that challenge, use the power God gives you, stand strong against temptation.

James 1:12

New International Version (NIV)

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Dear Lord, You see the temptations that come before me. I thank You for loving me when I mess up and give in. Please forgive me for those times. I am praying for strength to resist the things that are not pleasing to You. Help me, Father, to stand firm in my faith and to keep my YOUR standards as I face each trial. In Jesus Precious Name, Amen

SMALL STRAWS IN A SOFT WIND by MARSHA BURNS:
Keep your spirit clear and maintain peace. These are days when the enemy will bring all manner of temptation and distraction, but you must not deviate from truth, righteousness, and spiritual focus. Set your heart to be in complete unity with Me and My kingdom, says the Lord. I am yours, and you are Mine. Treasure these times when, faced with temptation, you overcome!

A Fish Story , Meeting God at the Pond

Fish stories. We hear all kind. Big, small, put up a fight, the one that got away and "Honestly I really did catch it by the tail." Life is full of stores just like these. Relationships can be the same way. Stories change, diminish, grow, and catch us by surprise. My fish story did exactly that. It hooked my heart by surprise and God
showed me how a small situation was actually tremendous. I am so glad I did not let this one get away.

The other night I was on the phone with my friend/ childhood social worker during the times of abuse. We were generally talking about how things were going. Where God was leading me. Writing, blogging, reaching out to others. (by the way , Liz doesn't talk about God much any more. Kind of a captive audience situation.....) I told her about the Darkness to Light classes and she expressed how she was proud of my growth. I shared with her on how God lead me to something I thought I would never say... that I want to be a person that even a pedophile or perpetrator could come to when they finally feel convicted . Ones who said, " I have had a enough" and are truly remorseful and have real conviction for what they had done.  Someone who could lead them to the right person for counseling, and to the correct authorities to handle such things. That was pretty "cool" to realize I had actually reached that point, no matter how fishy that sounded coming from me.

Our conversation went from the "ministry" side of topics to a conversation about how much I enjoy fishing. Liz asked me if that was something I did as a child. I stopped and took a deep breath when I recalled the times I did fish.

"Yes, Liz, I did. I fished in Pembroke meadows Lakes." Liz lived in Pembroke Meadows and so did the main childhood sexual abuser in my life. I fished in his back yard. Thoughts went also to Lynnhaven pier...where that same man would take me for all day fishing trips.

More memories came back to when I caught a huge catfish on a cane pole in Albemarle Sound where I, more that once woke up, already violated and drugged at this
same mans cabin.

Last night I realized that God allowed fishing to be my escape from an ugly world.  I could leave everything behind me and just be there with a hook, a line and a smile. With a pole in my hand and God at my side, I found rescue. I found peace by the waterside. God met me there. It was my safe haven and safe harbor. I had no idea what the joy was all about back then. I was not aquainted with the knowledge of the Joy of the Lord. I do know I was happiest when I had those moments to reel in hope.

Liz ended that fishing part of our conversation with ,"See something good did happen through all the bad times back then." She was  right. I am still learning that the Lord is, was and will be there for me.

Dueteronomy 31:6 NIV  Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Now when I sit at the bank, or wade in the creek, with a pole in my hand, I meet God. I bask in the SON and He in me. I love meeting God at the pond. In little moments like these, we can take God sized sighs, enjoying His presence.

I have learned what that Joy is all about. Makes my heart sing to  feel the what hope is. And when I sit with a pole on the side of the bank, I sit with God at my side and a smile on my face. When I cast I do as His word says:

1 Peter 5:7 NKJV:
casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Dear Lord, Help us to meet You in all circumstances. Thank You Heavenly Father, to have been there for all of us even before we knew You were there. How awesome it is to know You Lord, and feel the Joy that You provide.  Keep our eyes opened  to see you at the "water". In Jesus Name, Amen

With this fish story, I looked and looked for the perfect song that would show God at the river. A happy song came up on the list. I couldn't help but to play this one. Happy is what I feel today. Enjoy the fun and light heartedness that God brought me too. God bless you all.  "Fish" with all your can and "meet God at the pond."
